Troy, NY (April 20, 2017) – VioSafe™ White Light Disinfection™ technology, designed by Vital Vio to safely and continuously kill germs on indoor surfaces, has been selected as the 2017 Gold Award winner in the Healthy Lighting category, by the internationally renowned Edison Awards™. The distinguished awards, inspired by Thomas Edison’s persistence and inventiveness, recognize innovation, creativity and ingenuity in the global economy.

The awards winners – Gold, Silver, Bronze – in each category were announced at the 30th Annual Edison Awards Gala, Thursday evening, April 20th, in New York City, following a day-long Innovators Forum and Showcase at the New York Academy of Science.

“Germs are a pervasive threat in hospitals, homes, public spaces, and workplaces. Preventing deadly infections caused by the spread of these bacteria and other harmful organisms is a constant and costly battle. With our VioSafe™ technology, we have reinvented disinfection; putting light to work in a new way to safely, effectively, and continuously kill germs on indoor surfaces,” says Vital Vio co-founder and President Colleen Costello.

“Thomas Edison said, ‘There is a way to do it better, find it!’’ I was inspired to do just that after experiencing the devastating impact that hospital acquired infection had on my own grandmother. To have our white light disinfection technology be recognized as a Thomas Edison Gold Award winner, for that passionate pursuit of a better way, is a tremendous honor,” Costello said.

“Edison Gold designation is further affirmation of the power of our idea that our White Light Disinfection™ technology truly can transform the way we fight infection in the U.S. and around the world,” Costello said.

“It’s exciting to see companies like Vital Vio continuing Thomas Edison’s legacy of challenging conventional thinking,” said Frank Bonafilia, Edison Awards’ executive director. “Edison Awards recognizes the game-changing products and services, and the teams that brought them to consumers.”

The “healthy lighting” category winners also included the Silver awarded for Genesis DynaSpectrum™ by Lighting Science™ and the Bronze awarded for the LDG MR16 laser lamp by Parhelion.

Edison Award finalists are judged by more than 3,000 senior business executives and academics from across the nation whose votes acknowledge the awardee’s success in meeting the award’s stringent criteria of quality. Judging criteria focuses on the products concept, value, delivery and impact.

Unlike the hazards of UV lighting, VioSafe™ White Light Disinfection™ technology is suitable for continuous human exposure and does not require labor to operate or vacating a room during cleaning. Facilities managers and homeowners can now go beyond intermittent wiping and washing, by adding Vital Vio’s lights that multi-task to dramatically reduce contamination and infection risk. Research has shown that these overhead lighting systems emit constant, safe, sanitizing white light proven to kill germs indoors 24 hours a day. VioSafeTM antibacterial white LED products can safely and effectively kill up to 90% of harmful surface bacteria in just one day when used continuously in a controlled environment. Vital Vio’s disinfection technology, including products of various form factors and single-diode disinfection LEDs for OEM opportunities, is available directly through the company.

The Edison Awards is a program conducted by Edison Universe, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to fostering future innovators. Finalists in each category were announced in February.
